What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Because composite resin fillings are not made of metal, our team can blend shades to find the perfect color that matches your smile seamlessly. The biocompatible material also bonds with your enamel to help support its remaining structure. Medium and small composites often last between 5 and 10+ years, which is comparable to more traditional amalgams (silver fillings).

Not only do these lifelike restorations look more natural, but they also help prevent additional breakage and insulate against temperature changes. We believe in conservative dentistry, and preserving more of your tooth’s natural structure can improve your oral health for the future.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

After Dr. Noorda examines your teeth and determines that this is the best treatment to meet your unique needs, we can then begin your procedure. It might vary slightly based on your unique circumstances, but typically, we begin by numbing the area with a local anesthetic and/or sedating you to help you feel calm and comfortable.

Then, we’ll gently remove any damaged enamel and sanitize your tooth before applying putty-like composite resin to its surface in layers. Once it’s molded and shaped, this color-matched material is then hardened with an ultraviolet curing light, causing it to bond to your tooth. This results in a lifelike, lasting repair that helps enhance your appearance.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

There are several excellent reasons to consider getting tooth-colored fillings, including:

  • Preserve your tooth. This option bonds with your enamel to protect more of your tooth’s natural structure to help maintain your dental health long-term.
  • Improved appearance. The biocompatible material is carefully customized to match the shade of your enamel, so no one can tell you’ve had a tooth repaired.
  • Easy maintenance. There typically aren’t special care instructions other than maintaining a twice-daily dental hygiene routine, eating well-balanced meals, and visiting our team every 6 months for a routine exam and cleaning.
  • Prevent sensitivity. Some patients develop allergies or sensitivity to components used in metal fillings, which are unlikely to be triggered by composite resin.
  • Durable results. These often last 5 to 10+ years, which can be just as long as their metallic counterparts.
