Behind the Scenes of a Dental Checkup: Not Just About Teeth

If your regular dental checkup were a major motion film, there’s no doubt that your teeth would be the A-list actor. While they do get a lot of attention by checking for hardened plaque and cavities, it’s important not to forget the supporting characters! Your dentist is working hard to ensure that your oral health as a whole is good. Continue reading to learn three other things your dentist does at your checkup.

1.)  Checking Your Gums

Aside from your teeth, your gums play a big role in your smile. They are in charge of keeping your teeth in place, so making sure they are clear of bacteria is just as important. If it is under attack by plaque, then it can become infected and cause gum disease. This condition causes your gums to become inflamed and bleed when brushing or flossing. If left untreated, it can cause some serious complications, like tooth loss.

When you are sitting in your dentist’s chair, they check the pockets between your gums and teeth. The deeper they are, the more likely you are to have gum disease. The good news is that the early stage is reversible when caught as soon as possible!

2.)  Looking at Your Tongue and Salivary Glands

You may think that your tongue and saliva only play a role in your digestive process, from tasting food to starting the breakdown of it. However, they can help out with your oral health! For instance, your tongue can be an indicator of different conditions. If it has sores, white spots, or general discoloration, it can be a hint of you having a vitamin deficiency or a serious issue like oral cancer.

Saliva helps wash away harmful bacteria and remineralize your teeth’s enamel. When your salivary glands are working properly, it can cause dry mouth. That makes it easier for bacteria to cause problems like gum disease or cavities.

3.)  Looking at Your Bite

Misaligned teeth or another form of malocclusion can cause a myriad of problems for you. You may have trouble chewing your food or even speaking in some cases. Not only that, but if there are many nooks and crannies, then it can be hard to clean out those areas. Bacteria are more likely to build up and cause oral health issues. Your dentist looks at your bite and will suggest an orthodontic treatment that would work for you!

It’s important to understand that your mouth is much more than just your teeth! Every good actor needs a strong supporting cast to allow them to be as great as they are. Your pearly whites are no different! In the end, routine checkups help keep your teeth cavity-free and the rest of your smile healthy.
